History of CDLIS

The Central Department of Library and Information Science was established in 1995 (2052 BS) under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. From the year of establishment, the department started teaching postgraduate bachelor's degree courses for one year (B.Lib.Sc.). Such man-power became middle-level professional human resources. In order to cope with the information explosion age, specialized professional human resources were the need of the time. In this regard, in 2002 (2059 BS) TU has decided to start the Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc). This was the landmark for the professional development of librarianship in Nepal. After completing 10 batches of the yearly system, in 2014 (2071 BS), the semester system has been journeyed to the 7th batch.

The first Head of the Department was Dr. Madhusudan Karki, along whom Professor Dr. Mohan Raj Pradhan, Associate Professor Rudra Dulal, Associate Professor Bhim Dhoj Shrestha, Late Assistant Professor Nirmala Shrestha, Late Assistant Professor Lila Dahal were the faculties of the department. Among them Ass. Prof. Bhim Dhoj Shrestha continues till the day and all others are newly appointed faculties in 2017 from the last three years. The Present Head of the Department is Assistant Professor Lila Nyaichyai, PhD.  Assistant Professor Nira Manandhar, Assistant Professor Parbati Pandey, and Assistant Professor Sarita Gautam are the faculties of the department at present. 

The graduates from the departments are now in distinguished professional positions.  for instance, the deputy administrator of TU Bishnu Aryal, Chief Librarian of TUCL Indra Prasad Adhikari, Prakash Thapa, Gita Giri,  Undersecretary Yadav Chandra Niraula, Undersecretary Upendra Prasad Mainali, Assistant Professor of Central Department of Nepali Department Ashok Thapa, Ph.D, Kamala Sharma, librarian of the Parliament library, Prem Adhikari, Anju Rajbansi, Anita Bhattarai, Sagar Subedi, Nima Dhital, and many others are some of the names who achieved significant post in their professions.
